A brief History of CDI

For several years prior to the founding of CDI many dedicated individuals, each with decades of experience assisting low-income and at-risk families, discussed the limitations of support provided through current programs. “If only we could offer. . .” was a common theme of these discussions. Consistently legislature limits the services and the period services are available. As a result, programs have an engaged population that has been successful in certain areas, for instance obtaining quality employment, but efforts to help that individual move forward further, such as financial literacy and home ownership education cannot be provided because the term of service limited by government funding.

That group of dedicated individuals became CDI’s board of directors in 2006, and CDI was established to step in where legislature’s solutions leave off, to combine research, fundraising, and collaboration to make the “if only” hopes of dedicated and experienced professionals, a reality.

An “if only” becomes a reality - Testimonials:

Educational Data Systems, Incorporated is an organization involved in job training and employment assistance for low-income populations, helps over 1,000 non-custodial parents find quality employment each year at their facility in center-city Philadelphia. Most of the clients have never owned a suit, have no money to purchase a suit, not to mention the rest of the items to complete their outfit. Through a subcontract with CDI, a clothing program within their training facility has been created. Suited for Work Philadelphia provides not only professional clothing, it gives clients the advice, support and confidence to make it to their job interview with confidence.

Having a solution to our client’s clothing needs in our facility ensures we are able to meet their needs quickly, in a respectful manner that results in them feeling great about themselves. Our contract formerly gave us such a small amount to help clients, they could only purchase 1 item such as a shirt or shoes. Now, at no cost to the client, they walk away from the new store looking like a new person.
